You wouldn’t believe my story about squirrels in the attic of my former very large Maplewood home! Cutting out the background story about sheltering squirrels, we called a squirrel-remover person, who manned a watch for hours from his car parked on our front driveway which gave him a clear view of the exit hole near my gutters around my front door. The expert said he needed to find another hole — squirrels are smart and always have a secondary exit or entry.
Eventually he did, and we happily paid the fee!
However, as winter was settling in, the now homeless squirrels had to find shelter.
When I received a call from my Honda dealer maintenance department, the car had been taken in as a routine checkup, I was amazed that the first thing the mechanic asked me was if I had issues with squirrels! Seems when the mechanic took off the large carburetor cover (remember those?) he found it full of acorns stashed away within! It was a winter panty for my ousted squirrels — warm, dry, and free from predators!
Thanks for invoking the Maplewood memory, EBennet!

It sounds like we have at least one squirrel in our attic. I haven't gone up to investigate personally because I don't want to deal with an animal in my house in the middle of the night.
Any recommendations on who to call in the morning?
I worry about what could go wrong and blame the NPR classic "Squirrel Cop" https://www.thisamericanlife.org/115/first-day/act-two-0
We had the same problem. Contacted these guys (locals) and it was taken care of within a day. Basically, they found the entry point, attached a one-way gated tunnel to the entry point, then came back a week later and removed the gate and then sealed the entry point. Problem solved. They also inspected the house for other possible entry points for other furry creatures like mice.

Squirrel Cop, Peter Pan and Little Mermaid are classic.
I put in a strobe light in my attic when I had squirrels. Left it on 24/7 for about a week, they all left, then I sealed up the hole that was right under the roof and above the gutter. Couldn’t see it from the ground.
I had flying squirrels in my attic in South Orange. Took many weeks and much patience (mine and Jerry Buckingham's) but they finally quit their domicile-or maybe we just caught them all.
My neighbor in Mpw had squirrels in the attic. After the one-way gate was installed, it took them about 5 minutes to chew a new hole 6" off to the side.
While the board looked good, it was 90-100 years old and in poor condition. After he replaced the trim board, the squirrels stayed out.
