Meet the Mets (For Mets Fans Only!)

All right. Well, it was a real fun second half of the season and postseason. Something we haven’t gotten to enjoy in a while.

We can talk offseason moves later, I guess.

Ya Gotta Believe!!

Incredible season. Maybe my favorite ever. Lots to look forward to, but it will not be the same as this season!

I agree with you guys.  I didn't expect them to make the playoffs, let alone get this far.  But it still leaves me a little bummed.  Lots of off season decisions to be made.

I know this is a Mets fan thread only, but I got completely into their run this month.  Loved everything about the team.  The whole OMG thing.  The crazy last second wins.  Gotta love Lindor.

Congrats to you real fans for a great season. LA just has too much ammo.  And then Tommy Edman plays like Albert Pujols??

I am the Edman, they are the Edmen, I am the walrus, Goo goo g' joob.

It probably wouldn't have made a difference, but it would have been nice not wasting two spots on Senga and Acuna. They should have kept Ottavino and Krasnick. They clearly needed more pitchers and with McNeil coming back there was no use for Acuna.

yes. Lots of guys on expiring contracts, especially pitchers. I have to believe Severino and Quintana are gone. Manaea will opt out, but I'm hopeful they'll re-sign him.

Among position players we have some young guys waiting in the wings like Acuña and Mauricio. With guys on rookie deals and so much $$ coming off the books there will be resources to restock.

It was a great season though, and the better team won. So it's hard to be too disappointed.

I’m going on the record saying I’d love to see Noah Syndergaard at Spring Training for the Mets next year. He brought a great vibe to the team and he’s only 32.

I wouldn't have lost a minute's sleep if the Mets had not signed Soto. Now that they have, I say, GAME ON.

I will not argue the deal's merits or its worth.

The bottom line is that the Mets significantly improved their roster.

There are still a lot of moves to be made, but in DS we trust.

did you think this was clever?

Plenty of room to add pitching.  180 mil off the books, Soto adds 50 mil back.  Best part is now Yankee fans, who yesterday wanted Soto, are bashing Soto as not good.

coincidentally, this article was published in Baseball America today:

i think the Mets have become a well run organization.  Not every move will work, but they are moves that are thought through.

Yankee fan, so yes...

Max Fried to Yankees.

Maybe Mets can sign David Wells.

Not every Yankee fan was willing to go to those levels of $, especially for a superb 3-tool player.

Sounds like lots of sour grapes from Yankees fans.

Nope...just being realistic... he's a great hitter, but not fast and a lousy fielder. He was before the Yanks got him, and will be for the Mets. Good luck.

according to the metrics (admittedly not as good for field as hitting), Soto was not a lousy RF for the Yanks last year. According to the defensive metrics, he's MLB average in the outfield.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sotoju01.shtml

And baserunning is already baked into WAR, so the Mets know what they're getting from his combination of hitting and baserunning, and last year it was elite (7.9).  His WAR for his past five full seasons have been:

  • 5.0
  • 7.1
  • 5.5
  • 5.5
  • 7.9

Did the Mets overpay? Probably not for the first 5 years, given what teams are paying for each additional WAR a player adds. But there's a buyout clause after five years, so we can reassess the cost in 2029. If Soto delivers 35 WAR over the next five, he'll be worth what he was paid, and probably even the escalator to nullify his opt out for the five years after that.

Of course the last five years under most circumstances are likely not to be worth what he'll be paid. But by 2035 who's going to care if the Mets were a consistent contender for a decade? And it's Cohen's money anyway grin

I don't know why people look at this as if it's about money.  Cohen has plenty.  I don't care how much he spends.  If they get five superstar years I'm happy.  I also laugh at people who call this an absurd amount of money.  Frankly it's all absurd for a game, even the league minimum.

No one goes to a movie or a Broadway show or does the math. We fixate on the money a little too much.

The Mets are better today than they were a week ago. Period.

MLB provides entertainment for tens of millions of people. So it generates billions in revenue, especially from their media partners. I'd rather see that money go to the players than into the pockets of the owners. It's not like the teams are going to take less money from TV networks or lower ticket prices if the players get paid less.
If anything I'd like to see more of it going to minor league players.
